“Last year I spent eight months in South America. I decided to quit my job and I bought a ticket to Mexico. Then I travelled the continent country by country, completely on my own. I didn’t have any plans. I just wanted to spend time outside of Europe.”

“It’s a completely different world. People on the street were very helpful and nice. It was comparable with my job as a receptionist: you want to help people and show them around.”

“I met people with guns. Dangerous people. But they were nice. When I travel, I don’t visit usual places. I used to find strange places, like a church where I found people praying to a skull, a kind of skeleton. They call it ‘Santa Muerte’. You can see many bad guys with guns and knives. They pray to survive and believe in the same things we do. When they pray, people offer anything to Santa Muerte: cigars, bottles of alcohol, or cocaine. I saw a few bags of cocaine. It was one of the strangest places I’ve been to in my life.”

“Sometimes you think your world only consists of your city or neighbourhood. That’s why I decided to see what’s going on elsewhere in the world.”

Humans of Brussels
